I feel like in most official art, most of the cast is posing cutely and then someone is kind of off having their own weird moment.
I like how Gourry’s memory and stuff is used as a convenient “lets explain to the audience” device.
He becomes progressively more forgetful and unintelligent as the series progresses, too!
Like when he meets Lina he’s kind of dense and unobservant, but not really stupid, and a lot of it is him thinking Lina’s young because well, she is. In NEXT he has gotten a bit dumber but is the first to figure out that Xelloss is a mazoku. And… it gets really bad after that. By Revolution it’s kind of a wonder he can even dress himself.
In my headcanon he has some kind of degenerative neurological condition.
